It has been a timeless Jewish tradition to remember and memorialize loved ones by writing and dedicating a Torah scroll in their memory. October 7, 2023, happened on Simchat Torah, when Jews throughout the world unify and dance in celebration with the Torah. It was an assault on all of us, body and soul.
Every living being is comprised of body and soul, spirit and matter. Far from an inanimate object designed to record information, a Torah scroll is a living embodiment of our tradition, heritage, and identity. For this reason, every individual is mandated to write their own Torah, making it ours, and to involve and engage, participating in unifying ink and parchment, thereby creating spirit and meaning.
With that in mind, we proudly announce an exciting and audacious, unprecedented Yale project, the writing of Yours, Mine, & Ours: Yale Unity Torah.
A Torah scroll is written by an expertly trained scribe on parchment using specially prepared ink inscribed with a quill.
We endeavor to collectively commission a Torah scroll in which every student, alumni, and faculty of the Yale Jewish community becomes a partner.
This will be yours, mine, and ours to read from, learn from, and dance with.
